Recollections of College El

The 2nd grade girls sliding their rugs around during rest period to get close to Dick Archer; playing Red Rover and Dodge Ball in gym class in the old gym [Central Hall] on the second floor with the wooden track running around it above it and knowing that I would never be able to climb those ropes; dreading having to sing alone in music class and having Mrs. Thiers lead us in various programs at Warriner Hall "with rhythmic and melodic instruments"  (I still have some of the programs); going to Gover's for red wax lips, penny candy and the latest Nancy Drew mystery; the sheepsheds next to the railroad tracks and coins placed thereon;  rehearsing for Splash Splash World, a swim show we did in junior high in the big new fieldhouse pool; enduring math class in absolute terror of Thelma Marshall (and realizing later that she was one of the best teachers I had)....I think she used to say something like "sing it out, Sam" to all of us to get us to speak out...does anyone remember what it was exactly?

Personal News

Thirty two years working in one Library!  I finally got tired of it and retired Oct. 1999 to do some other things.  So far, I’m going genealogical research for myself and donor prospect research for the local Alzheimer’s Association Chapter, reading, writing, and quilting.  My husband and I hope to do a lot of traveling, as well.  My mother died in 1996.  My father, Elbert R. Bowen was on the faculty of Central Michigan University in the Speech Department for many years.  He now lives in Holly Hill (near Daytona Beach), Florida.  My sisters Bonnie (College El class of  ‘58) and Jennifer (College El class of ’70) will no doubt contribute their own information.  I’ve been married to Neil Haldeman for almost 27 years.  He retired after 30 years as a systems analyst/database manager and manager of information systems at the University of Michigan.  He now spends his time writing, practicing the guitar and playing golf.  I have two children:  Glenna Beth Redmond, a sampling researcher at the Institute for Social Research at the University of Michigan and Tim Haldeman, a student of jazz saxophone at the Chicago College of the Performing Arts, Roosevelt University, Chicago, IL.
