College Elementary School

 Brian Long recalls the context of this image:

“The picture was part of the celebration for the return of Fran Martin from Afghanistan. This is when you [Bob Knapp] and I were in fourth grade [1955-56]; we [the class of ‘58] are to the right, out of the sight of the picture.  The procession started at the back door [of the College El], and we all threw confetti as we marched toward the front door.  As I recall, the photographer from the C.M.U. Life had one of those old style press cameras, and took pictures all the way around the building.  He must have shot at least 10 or 15, and the one that was printed was just one of many that probably included all or most of the of the classes by the time he finished.  The teachers had us whipped up to a frenzy, but most of us didn’t even know who Fran Martin was.”
