Personal Tidbits

Hal writes, "I was a bit of an exception, as I was born in December and was considered [by the College El teachers] too young initially to attend [College El].  So my mother enrolled me at Fancher Elementary School, where I attended both kindergarten and first grade.  I teransferred over the the College El for the second grade, when the teachers there decided, I guess, that I could handle it."  Hal moved with his family to San Jose, California in June, 1957.  He was attending California State Polytechnic College (now University; "Cal Poly") at the time his family moved to Ashland, Oregon (Southern Oregon University) in 1964.  He completed his BS at Cal Poly, then earned an MS in mathematics at Cal State Hayward before earning a PhD in Computer Science at Penn State.

Hal's father, Dana R. Sudborough, had been professor of mathematics at Central, moved to the faculty of San Jose State University (1957-1964) continued as a professor at SOU until his retirement in 1980, and died in 1997. He and Irene are buried next to each other in a small plot in Ashland, Oregon.  His mother remarried and lives in Leslie, Michigan.

One of Hal's brothers, Mike, was killed in battle in Vietnam in 1967.  The other brother, Dana, has two grown daughters (Jessica, 31; Natalie, 25) and serves as a missionary in Burkino Faso, Africa.
